China and Nigeria are significantly boosting their collaborative efforts to promote the comprehensive advancement of women and push for greater gender equality across the globe. This reinforced commitment was articulated during the recent China Women’s Film Festival in Abuja, an event that successfully merged cultural diplomacy with a vital dialogue on social progress.
The festival provided the perfect stage for the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, represented by Minister Zhou Hongyou, to reaffirm the nation’s unwavering dedication to the cause of women’s empowerment. Mr. Hongyou highlighted that the Chinese government views the progression of women as a central pillar of its national development strategy. Specific priority areas include ensuring greater access to quality education, securing expanded employment opportunities, and fostering deeper social inclusion for all women. He praised Chinese women as an absolutely vital force, whose intelligence, talents, and creativity have been instrumental in China’s remarkable economic and social transformation over the past five decades, moving it from an underdeveloped state to a major world economic power. The Minister described their contribution as indispensable to the nation’s success story.
Looking ahead, Mr. Hongyou announced that China is organising a forthcoming Global Women’s Summit. The primary focus of this high-level meeting will be promoting comprehensive gender equality and accelerating women’s development globally. This initiative is consciously designed to align with and significantly advance the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, framing women as essential and non-negotiable agents of sustainable change. Furthermore, the Chinese government has deeply integrated women’s development goals into its national five-year economic and social plans, utilising the measured status and progress of women as a crucial benchmark for evaluating the nation’s overall well-being and advancement. He underlined that expanding global cooperation and forging stronger bonds with partners such as Nigeria are key strategies for fast-tracking international progress in this area. Through such strong bilateral partnerships, China aims to open a new and vibrant chapter in the global movement for women’s development.
From the Nigerian side, Mr. Gabriel Saleh Zock, who chairs the House Committee on Culture and Creative Economy, expressed profound appreciation for China’s contribution to cultural diplomacy through the film festival. He lauded the Embassy of China and the China Cultural Center in Nigeria for their consistent commitment to building bridges between the two nations’ creative communities. He stressed that these cultural collaborations not only provide a powerful platform to celebrate women working in the film industry but also effectively strengthen the creative and cultural ties connecting Nigeria and China, inspiring new possibilities for knowledge exchange and artistic partnership. Mr. Zock also took the opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s own serious dedication to gender inclusion and empowerment. He informed attendees that the National Assembly is currently working on crucial constitutional amendments with a view to implementing a 30 per cent reserve seat for women in governance. This proactive measure is intended to significantly increase female representation in leadership and decision-making roles, ensuring that more Nigerian women take their rightful place in the country’s political landscape, in line with broader international goals for equality. He concluded by asserting that through shared efforts, Nigeria and China can champion a creative future where art continues to unite humanity, and where peace and prosperity follow the exchange of art and culture.
The Minister of Women Affairs, represented by a goodwill message delivered by Mrs. Iman Suleman-Ibrahim, further affirmed the significance of the event. She celebrated the China Women’s Film Festival as a distinguished platform that showcases creativity, resilience, and the powerful role of storytelling in connecting nations and inspiring necessary social change. The message noted that the art of film possesses the unique ability to bridge cultures, ignite compassion, and build mutual understanding across international borders. The festival was acknowledged as being especially significant as it coincided with a renewed global reflection on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the landmark framework that has guided three decades of advocacy for women’s rights and empowerment. As the world revisits the foundational spirit of Beijing, both nations reaffirmed their shared duty to ensure that every woman and girl, regardless of where she lives, can fulfil her potential.
Mrs. Suleman-Ibrahim further highlighted that this moment of collaboration aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which explicitly places the populace at the very heart of Nigeria’s national development strategy. She noted that the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs is driving transformative initiatives under this agenda, focusing on programmes that promote women’s economic empowerment, strengthen the family structure, enhance child protection measures, and improve welfare for vulnerable segments of society. The potential for deepening collaboration with the Chinese Embassy is immense, she argued, especially as China’s notable success in leveraging culture, technology, and social innovation provides invaluable lessons for Nigeria.
