On January 7, 2026, Nigeria’s stock market reached a new high, with the All-Share Index (ASI) rising above 160,000 points, a level the market has never reached before. This achievement shows renewed confidence among investors and strong activity across several stocks.

The ASI rose by 0.40%, closing at 160,591.8, as 1.4 billion shares were traded, almost twice as many as the previous session. This increase in trading volume shows that more investors are actively participating in the market than before. Meanwhile, the total value of all listed companies on the exchange known as market capitalization climbed to ₦102.68 trillion, highlighting the growing worth of Nigerian equities.

A number of companies led the charge, with Union Dicon Salt, Seplat Energy, and Okomu Oil each gaining 10% in share price. These gains helped push the ASI higher. On the flip side, some stocks like Cadbury and AustinLaz saw declines, showing that while the market is strong, investors are still taking profits where they can.

In terms of trading activity, Universal Insurance stood out with the highest number of shares traded, followed by Linkassure and AccessCorp. When measured by total value exchanged, Seplat Energy was the most actively traded, with others such as Aradel and Zenith Bank also seeing significant action.

The ASI’s rise has lifted its performance for the year, with the index gaining about 3.20% since the start of 2026. Many market watchers see this strong start to the year as a sign that the rally could continue, especially if buying pressure remains healthy and more investors enter the market.

Overall, breaching the 160,000 point mark is a major milestone for Nigeria’s stock market, reflecting growing interest and broad participation that could underpin further gains, even as some short-term corrections may occur.
