Tinubu Backs Ogun Police Academy Campus With Major Funding

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the creation of a new campus for the Nigeria Police Academy in Ogun State, a move aimed at strengthening police training and improving security operations across the country. The decision also comes with a significant financial commitment, as the Federal Government has set aside ₦15 billion as a take off grant for the project.

According to official details, the new academy will be located in Erinja, within Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. This expansion is part of a broader effort to improve the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force by providing more training facilities and better infrastructure for officers.

A statement from the presidency explained that “the President’s approval was in fulfilment of the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021”. This law allows the existing academy in Wudil, Kano State, to grow into multiple campuses across the country.

The newly approved ₦15 billion fund is intended to support the early stages of development. It will cover essential structures such as classrooms, hostels, and training facilities, as well as key equipment needed for modern policing. Authorities also noted that the funding will come from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

This development reflects the government’s wider plan to improve security by investing in human capacity and modern systems. In recent months, the administration has repeatedly emphasised the need to upgrade police training, intelligence gathering, and operational tools. These efforts are designed to make the police force more effective in tackling crime and maintaining public safety.

By establishing another campus, the government hopes to reduce pressure on existing training centres while also increasing the number of officers that can be trained at once. This is particularly important as Nigeria continues to face security challenges that require a well trained and adequately equipped police force.

The approval of the Ogun campus also highlights a growing focus on decentralising training institutions. Instead of relying on a single location, multiple campuses will allow recruits from different regions to access training more easily. This approach is expected to improve both efficiency and inclusiveness in police recruitment and development.

In addition, the project is seen as part of a long term strategy to modernise law enforcement in Nigeria. With better facilities and increased funding, the Police Academy is expected to produce officers who are more prepared to handle today’s complex security issues, including cybercrime, terrorism, and community policing.

Overall, the new campus represents both an expansion of infrastructure and a commitment to reform. By combining financial investment with structural changes, the government aims to build a stronger and more responsive police system that can meet the country’s evolving security needs.
