Moniepoint’s card payment infrastructure processes more than 20 million transactions every day, highlighting the growing scale of digital payments and the increasing demand for reliable financial technology in Nigeria.

The fintech disclosed the figure during its inaugural Off the Record Engineering Mixer in Lagos, where technology professionals from Moniepoint, Flutterwave, Cowrywise and Nomba discussed the challenges of operating payment systems at scale.

According to Moniepoint, handling such a large volume of transactions requires more than simply processing payments quickly. Its infrastructure is designed to identify potential failures and determine how transactions should be handled when banks, payment processors or network connections experience problems. The company said its system separates transactions that are clearly unlikely to succeed from those where the final outcome is uncertain.

Where the system determines that a transaction will fail, it stops the process quickly. However, where the outcome is unclear, additional checks are carried out before a final response is given to the customer. The approach is intended to reduce situations where customers are debited even though their payments have not been completed. Such incidents can leave customers waiting for reversals and refunds. Ayomide Kolawole, Engineering Manager, Card Payments at Moniepoint, said reliable payment infrastructure should account for possible points of failure and protect customers when problems occur.

“Building reliable payment infrastructure is about understanding every point at which a transaction can fail, determining what the system knows at each stage and designing the right response when things go wrong,” he said.

Kolawole added that customers should not have to bear the consequences of uncertainty within payment systems. “Our responsibility is to ensure that customers are not left carrying the consequences of uncertainty created within a system they rely on,” he said.

Moniepoint said part of its payment infrastructure continuously monitors the performance of banks connected to different payment processors. The system tracks transaction success rates and response times in real time. When a particular destination records performance below a set threshold, the system can automatically stop sending transactions to it. This is designed to reduce delays and prevent failed transactions from accumulating.

Kolawole said the company’s objective is not only to process payments rapidly but also to ensure that technical problems do not become additional burdens for customers. The discussion at the Lagos engineering forum also focused on the wider challenges involved in running large financial technology systems. Participants examined issues including system failures, network dependence, cybersecurity, monitoring and the use of distributed systems.

These challenges are becoming increasingly important as digital payments become more common across Nigeria and businesses rely more heavily on electronic payment channels. Moniepoint says its broader infrastructure processes more than $250 billion in digital payment transaction value annually. The company also describes itself as Nigeria’s largest merchant acquirer and says its technology powers a significant share of the country’s Point of Sale transactions. The fintech has also expanded its services beyond payments to include banking, credit and business management tools for businesses and individuals.

Its latest transaction figures underline the growing importance of reliable payment infrastructure as more Nigerians and businesses depend on digital platforms for everyday financial activities.
