The Gateway Programme, a five-year initiative designed to connect 340,000 young Nigerians to sustainable global gig work, has officially commenced as stakeholders intensify efforts to tackle youth unemployment through digital skills development.
Implemented by Co-creation HUB Ltd (CcHUB), the programme is positioned to help young Nigerians tap into the fast-growing global gig economy, projected to reach about $1.85 trillion by 2032.
The initiative is aimed at closing Nigeria’s persistent skills-to-employment gap by equipping participants with practical competencies suited to the demands of the digital marketplace. Its goal is to move thousands of young people from unemployment into stable income generation through flexible, remote work opportunities.
At launch, the programme is focusing on four in-demand creative and digital skill areas: digital marketing, video production and editing, graphic design, and UI/UX design. These skill sets were selected to match current global demand and improve participants’ chances of securing work in the international freelance market.
Beyond skills acquisition, the programme also places strong emphasis on inclusion. Organisers said Gateway is intentionally structured to increase access for underserved groups, with a particular focus on young women, persons with disabilities, displaced youth, and other vulnerable young Nigerians.
This approach is expected to help address gender imbalance in the digital workforce while broadening access to income opportunities for groups that are often excluded from mainstream employment pathways.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Managing Director of Co-creation HUB Ltd, Ojoma Ochai, described the programme as a major intervention in Nigeria’s unemployment crisis.
“The Gateway Programme represents a crucial, life-changing intervention in Nigeria’s youth unemployment challenge,” Ochai said.
“By connecting 340,000 vulnerable young people to high-demand creative digital skills and direct pathways into the global gig economy, we are enabling them to become immediate and sustainable income earners.”
The programme comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking scalable solutions to job creation for its large youth population. With global demand rising for digital and freelance talent, Gateway could provide a structured pathway for thousands of young Nigerians to earn competitively, work remotely, and participate more actively in the global digital economy.
