OPay, a leading financial technology company in Nigeria, has expanded its long term investment in education through its N1.2 billion 10 year scholarship programme.
The initiative, which forms part of the broader OPay Scholars Programme, was initially introduced to support students across 20 tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Following a new partnership with Miva Open University, the number of institutions participating in the programme has now increased to 25. OPay also plans to extend the scholarship scheme to 16 more tertiary institutions before the end of 2026. If the expansion is completed as planned, the programme will cover 41 institutions across the country.
For many Nigerian students, financial support can determine whether they remain in school or are forced to suspend their education. Rising education costs have placed additional pressure on students and their families, making scholarship opportunities increasingly important. The company said the programme is designed to provide consistent financial assistance rather than being limited to one off donations. Under the initiative, scholarship support will continue for 10 years, giving beneficiaries greater stability throughout their academic journey.
The latest partnership with Miva Open University is expected to further broaden access to the programme. Miva operates a technology focused and flexible model of higher education, allowing students to pursue their studies through a different approach to traditional university education. OPay said its decision to expand the programme demonstrates its intention to reach more students and institutions in the coming years.
The company’s education initiative is also connected to other youth focused programmes, including the OPay National Innovation Challenge, which is being implemented in partnership with Google and 3MTT, as well as OPay Futures. The scholarship programme goes beyond providing immediate financial assistance, as the company views investment in students as an investment in Nigeria’s future.
Beneficiaries of the scheme could go on to become professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, technology specialists, healthcare workers and leaders who contribute to the country’s development. For families struggling with the cost of tertiary education, the financial support can reduce some of the pressure associated with tuition and other academic expenses. It can also give students an opportunity to concentrate more fully on their studies without constantly worrying about how to fund their education.
OPay’s decision to maintain the programme over a 10 year period also reflects a longer term approach to corporate social responsibility. Rather than focusing only on short term interventions, the company is positioning education and youth development as areas for sustained investment. With the planned addition of 16 institutions, OPay expects its scholarship programme to reach 41 tertiary institutions by the end of 2026. The company’s continued expansion of the initiative highlights its stated commitment to supporting young Nigerians and contributing to human capital development through education.
For students and their families, the programme represents more than financial assistance. It provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to remain in school, complete their education and build careers that could contribute to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
