The renowned automaker Toyota Motor Corporation has celebrated the world premiere of its new model, the Land Cruiser FJ, signaling a fresh chapter in its legendary 4×4 lineage. Scheduled for a Japanese launch around mid-2026, the FJ steps into a more accessible, compact role within the Land Cruiser family.
Originally introduced in 1951 as the Toyota BJ, the Land Cruiser nameplate cemented its place in automotive history when it became the first vehicle to reach the sixth station of Mount Fuji, and from that point the brand has upheld a commitment to safety and security for all types of people in places that only the Land Cruiser can reach.
With cumulative sales exceeding 12.15 million units across more than 190 countries, the Land Cruiser series has established itself as a global standard of durability and off-road capability.
The FJ expands the model lineup to encompass a wider audience. Until now the series included three distinct variants: the Station Wagon (currently the 300 Series) delivering the latest tech; the Heavy-Duty 70 Series built for rugged service; and the Core 250 Series (introduced in 2024), which returned to simpler, practical Land Cruiser roots.
In naming the new model, Toyota emphasises the values that the FJ embodies: Freedom & Joy, defined as the pleasure of enjoying the Land Cruiser “in your own way,” while still preserving the reliability, durability and off-road performance that support people’s lives and lifestyles.
On the design front, the Land Cruiser FJ fuses tradition with modern utility. Its boxy silhouette and chunky proportions emphasise habitability and cargo space; removable, segmented bumpers improve repairability and allow user customisation; the shorter wheelbase (around 270 mm less than the 250 Series) enhances manoeuverability while maintaining serious off-road capability.
Behind the scenes, the FJ utilises a rugged body-on-frame platform (IMV series), and its build retains the off-road DNA of its bigger siblings: excellent ground clearance, strong rigidity, and durability honed through global testing.
By presenting this model at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (held from 30 October to 9 November at Tokyo Big Sight), Toyota signalled its intent to bring the new Land Cruiser into markets beyond its core premium segment.
In summary, the new Land Cruiser FJ delivers: an accessible Land Cruiser variant; solid off-road capability; the trusted heritage of over seven decades of global usage; and targeted customisation, all wrapped in the ethos of “Freedom & Joy”.
By introducing the more affordable Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota broadens its market reach into emerging economies and mid-tier segments, increasing production volumes and improving economies of scale. This model supports stronger global sales growth, cost-efficient platform sharing, and bolsters supplier networks in Asia, driving revenue expansion and competitive positioning for the brand.
