Kenyan Tycoon John Kimani’s Kakuzi Wins Supreme Court Reprieve in Land Dispute

Kakuzi Plc, the Nairobi-listed agricultural producer partly owned by Kenyan businessman John Kimani, has secured a temporary victory in a long-standing land dispute.

The Supreme Court has suspended a lower court decision that awarded Makuyu Golf Club approximately 72 acres of land claimed by Kakuzi, pending the hearing and determination of the company’s second appeal.

This latest development comes as Kakuzi faces broader scrutiny over land use, including a directive from Kenya’s National Land Commission to surrender 3,200 acres to local communities citing historical land injustices.

Kakuzi has pushed back against the order, warning investors it poses a “material risk” to operations and threatens constitutionally protected property rights.

Despite these challenges, Kakuzi has expanded its product range, investing in climate resilience and upgrading its Nginye dam to secure long-term production.

However, the company reported a 15% decline in half-year profit to Ksh295.5 million ($2.3 million) due to lower avocado valuations.
