Two months after his expulsion from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Abdulmumin Jibrin, the fourth-term House of Representatives member for Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, has formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress. His return ends months of speculation about his political alignment and reinforces his close ties with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Addressing a rally in his hometown of Kofa on Monday, Jibrin described his decision as a deliberate effort to avoid past mistakes. He pledged to mobilise supporters from the NNPP and deliver overwhelming backing for President Tinubu’s second-term bid in the 2027 elections.
Mobilising support and religious engagement
Earlier, Jibrin convened around 2,000 Islamic clerics from his constituency to pray for President Tinubu and for peace and development in Kiru/Bebeji and across Nigeria. Shortly after the rally, he shared videos on social media showing jubilant supporters celebrating his return to the APC and declaring their intention to vote for Tinubu.
“Today, I was warmly received by thousands of constituents in Kofa. The gathering resolved to leave the NNPP, join the APC, and endorse President Tinubu for a second term,” Jibrin said.
Political background and strategy
Jibrin, who previously served as spokesperson for the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, had attempted to facilitate the return of his former mentor, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the APC. This initiative, however, drew resistance from some APC stakeholders in Kano and ultimately led to his expulsion from the NNPP for alleged anti-party activities and non-payment of membership dues.
By rejoining the APC, Jibrin signals a consolidation of political influence in Kano and a potential shift in voter dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections. His return is likely to strengthen Tinubu’s support base in the region and could influence the broader political landscape.
