A massive blaze tore through a commercial building in Lagos’ bustling Computer Village early on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, leaving traders and business owners counting losses worth millions of naira.
The fire broke out before 2:00 a.m. at a one-story structure on Somoye Osundairo Street in the Ikeja section of Lagos State, a place well known as one of West Africa’s largest electronics and technology markets.
According to a preliminary statement from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emergency teams were alerted through the state’s emergency lines, 767 and 112, and quickly mobilised to tackle the blaze.
Officials said the upper floor of the building, which housed various traders selling computers, laptops, phones and accessories, was already fully engulfed in flames when responders arrived. Thick smoke and intense heat made initial efforts difficult, reflecting how fiercely the fire had taken hold.
LASEMA confirmed the firefighting operation contained and eventually suppressed the fire.
“Firefighting operations have successfully suppressed and contained the fire within the affected building. Continuous damping-down operations are ongoing to eliminate residual heat and prevent re-ignition,” the agency said in a statement.
As safety teams worked to fully extinguish the blaze, they also cordoned off the area to protect nearby buildings, which are close together in the dense market hub.
Despite the ferocity of the fire, no deaths were reported. However, emergency responders said at least one firefighter from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was treated for minor injuries on-site by officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The eventual destruction was severe: all goods stored in the building were lost. LASEMA officials and other reports said the total value of destroyed inventory runs into the millions of naira, though exact figures are still being tallied.
“All goods and properties worth millions of naira stored therein were totally destroyed by the conflagration,” the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA confirmed in some media reports.
Authorities have begun investigating the cause of the fire, but no official determination has yet been made. Investigators are expected to examine both the immediate triggers and any deeper safety lapses.
Computer Village is widely recognised as a crucial commercial area for tech and electronics trade in Lagos. It is characterised by many small and medium-sized businesses trading mobile phones, computers, peripherals, accessories and refurbished devices. The area’s vibrancy makes it a key market not only for Lagosians but also customers from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
The destruction of goods worth millions of naira is more than just a loss for individual traders; it echoes across the local economy. Markets like Computer Village employ thousands of people, generate daily commercial activity, and serve as hubs for import and resale commerce.
