The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has extended Eid-el-Fitr greetings to the Muslim Ummah, urging Nigerians to embrace peace, compassion and unity amid the country’s challenges.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, President of the CBCN and Archbishop of Kaduna, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso, commended Muslims for their discipline and devotion during Ramadan, describing their fasting, prayer and almsgiving as a strong witness of faith in a troubled world.
He said the sacred practices observed during the month reflected values that remain important for national renewal, especially at a time when Nigeria is grappling with division and hardship.Ndagoso also noted the rare significance of this year’s spiritual calendar, pointing out that Christians and Muslims in Nigeria began their fasting seasons on the same day.
According to him, the coincidence underscores the shared values of sacrifice, prayer and dependence on God in both faith traditions.“This providential convergence highlights our shared commitment to sacrifice, prayer and reliance on God,” he said.
The archbishop said the moment should remind both Christians and Muslims that they are united in a common pursuit of righteousness and peace, and called for stronger bonds across religious lines. He urged Nigerians to go beyond peaceful coexistence and embrace true brotherhood in order to confront the country’s social, economic and political difficulties together.“
At a time when our nation faces serious challenges, it calls us to live as brothers and sisters, working side by side for the healing and renewal of our land,” Ndagoso stated. He prayed that the spiritual gains of Ramadan would inspire purity of intention and deeper compassion among citizens, while also asking for divine guidance for leaders in the service of the common good.“
He further sought divine guidance for Nigeria’s leaders, asking that they be led in the ‘path of righteousness and in the service of the common good’.”Ndagoso also prayed for national unity, safety and blessings for families across the country as Muslims mark the end of Ramadan.
