A violent raid by bandits on the Dogon Ruwa community in the Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, has left one person dead and several others missing, including a prominent religious leader. During the attack on Thursday evening, gunmen abducted Abdulrashid Baduku, an imam from Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), along with his muezzin and six other residents. The victims were targeted on the outskirts of the village while they were engaged in the commercial production of charcoal, a vital economic activity for many in the region.

The raid has sparked widespread panic in Wase, an area that has become increasingly besieged by kidnapping and banditry. Local youth leader Shapi’i Sambo confirmed that while residents attempted to trail the attackers shortly after the incident, the kidnappers managed to escape into the cover of darkness. This latest assault follows a string of deadly encounters in the district, including a recent ambush in the same community that claimed the lives of two soldiers and two vigilantes, as well as attacks on the Sabon Gari and Zak communities earlier in the week that left six people dead.

From an economic perspective, the persistent insecurity in Plateau’s rural districts is severely disrupting local trade and livelihoods. The targeting of individuals during charcoal processing a labor-intensive industry that supports many households threatens to stall micro-economic activity and worsen poverty levels in the state. Furthermore, the recurring nature of these attacks, despite the presence of security personnel, highlights the significant challenge of protecting remote communities where agricultural and artisanal production takes place.

While the Plateau State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the abduction, additional security forces have been deployed to Dogon Ruwa to restore order and reassure the traumatized populace. For the broader Nigerian landscape, the situation in Wase underscores the urgent need for a more robust and proactive security strategy to safeguard religious leaders and rural workers. As long as banditry continues to disrupt community life and economic production, the path to regional stability and food security remains under threa
