Airlines face mounting pressure as ticket revenues remain trapped

Airlines operating in Nigeria are facing mounting financial pressure as billions of naira in ticket revenues remain trapped due to foreign exchange constraints, deepening liquidity challenges in the aviation sector.

Industry operators say the backlog of funds, generated largely from international ticket sales, has continued to strain airline balance sheets, limiting their ability to meet operational costs such as aircraft leasing, maintenance, insurance, and overseas service payments.

According to aviation stakeholders, the difficulty in repatriating revenues reflects broader foreign exchange pressures in the economy, which have disrupted cash flow planning for airlines and increased exposure to currency risk. Several carriers are said to be carrying large naira balances they are unable to convert or remit abroad, forcing some to adjust flight schedules or scale back expansion plans.

Airline executives warn that prolonged delays in revenue repatriation could weaken confidence among foreign carriers and investors, especially as many operational obligations are denominated in foreign currency. They note that while ticket sales continue, access to dollars remains unpredictable, complicating long-term financial planning.

The situation has also affected pricing strategies, with some airlines adjusting fares to reflect currency volatility and rising operating costs. Analysts say the pressure could translate into higher ticket prices for passengers if the FX bottlenecks persist.

Nigeria’s aviation authorities have previously acknowledged the challenge and said efforts were underway to clear outstanding airline funds as part of broader measures to stabilise the foreign exchange market. However, operators say progress has been slower than expected, leaving airlines exposed to ongoing financial stress.

Industry groups have urged closer coordination between monetary authorities and aviation regulators to prioritise the clearance of trapped funds, warning that failure to address the issue could undermine connectivity, reduce route availability, and weaken Nigeria’s position as a regional aviation hub.

As airlines navigate rising costs and currency uncertainty, stakeholders say resolving the issue of trapped ticket revenues will be critical to restoring stability and sustaining growth in the sector.
