In a major fiscal commitment aimed at accelerating urban renewal and infrastructure development, the Adamawa State Executive Council has approved a series of capital projects totaling over N23 billion. The contracts span crucial areas including road construction, public facility upgrades, sports development, and enhanced urban security through widespread illumination.
The comprehensive package was endorsed during a recent Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the Government House in Yola. Garba Pella, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, conveyed the details to journalists, emphasizing that the projects are designed to uplift living standards and accelerate growth across various local government areas.
The largest chunk of the approval, amounting to N13 billion, is dedicated to a major urban renewal effort focused on Yola North Local Government Area, specifically Jimeta. This significant investment will cover the construction, rehabilitation, and expansion of vital inner-city roads, including Abdullahi Bashir Waziri Street, Bekaji Road, Popule Street and its adjacent links, as well as internal road networks within GGSS Yola. These road works are central to decongesting traffic and modernizing the state capital’s rapidly expanding metropolis.
Key Project Allocations
Further infrastructure funding was allocated to complementary urban development schemes. An additional N5.6 billion was approved for extensive works at the ongoing Jimeta ultra-modern shopping mall project. These funds will facilitate the installation of necessary external infrastructure, including internal road networks, drainage systems, landscaping, and the crucial provision of solar-powered streetlights to ensure continuous security and business operations.
In the realm of sports, the council approved N3.6 billion for Phase Two of the Adamawa State International Sports Complex Project. This phase has been segmented into five distinct lots, building upon the initial development, which is reportedly nearing completion. This focus underscores the administration’s drive to provide world-class recreational and athletic facilities for its citizens. Furthermore, N1.3 billion was earmarked for the procurement and installation of solar-powered streetlights along five major thoroughfares: Galadima Aminu Way, Gimba Dual Carriageway, Bekaji Dual Carriageway, Mubi Road, and the A.A. Lawan Flyover, significantly boosting nighttime security and public safety.
Broader Context of Development
This N23 billion approval is consistent with Governor Fintiri’s widely recognized commitment to aggressive infrastructure rollout, a vision that has earned him the moniker “The Project Master.” The administration consistently prioritizes capital projects, evidenced by the N25.5 billion allocated to the Ministry of Works and Energy Development in the state’s 2024 budget, representing over 22 percent of the total estimate.
Recent government actions, such as the approval of a massive N135 billion supplementary budget and numerous multi-billion-naira contracts for other key institutions, reinforce this trend. These parallel projects include the renovation and upgrade of facilities for the State Civil Service Commission and the revival of the Adamawa Digital Academy (N926 million), all aligning with the larger goal of modernizing public infrastructure to meet global standards.
Finally, the state also approved consultancy services worth N212 million for the design of perimeter fences and gatehouses at the palaces of newly established chiefdoms, alongside the design of the proposed Adamawa Traditional Rulers Secretariat Complex. A separate N133 million was approved for the design of office facilities for the State’s Urban and Regional Planning Development Authority and the Post-Primary Schools Management Board, ensuring that institutional capacity keeps pace with physical infrastructure development.
