Nigeria’s telecom industry is thriving, boasting 171.566 million subscribers by August 2025, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Despite the buzz around 5G, 4G technology continues to reign supreme, capturing the largest market share. The NCC’s latest data reveals 4G’s dominance, even as 5G networks expand, signaling a slower-than-expected shift to the next-generation technology.

The subscriber base grew by 0.53% from July’s 170.66 million, reflecting steady demand. MTN Nigeria leads with 82.6 million users, holding a 41.24% market share. Airtel follows with 54.8 million subscribers (27.39%), while Globacom and 9mobile trail with 32.1 million (16.02%) and 30.8 million (15.35%), respectively. This competitive landscape underscores MTN’s stronghold, though Airtel’s growth hints at shifting dynamics.

4G’s lead is clear, with 78.3 million subscriptions, dwarfing 2G’s 45.2 million, 3G’s 40.7 million, and 5G’s modest 3.4 million. The NCC attributes 4G’s success to its reliability and widespread adoption, particularly in urban areas. Meanwhile, 5G’s rollout, led by MTN and Airtel since 2022, faces hurdles. High device costs and limited infrastructure have slowed 5G’s uptake, despite its promise of faster speeds and lower latency.

Dr. Aminu Maida, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, emphasized 4G’s role in driving digital inclusion, stating, “4G remains the backbone of Nigeria’s connectivity.” He noted that 5G’s growth depends on affordable devices and expanded coverage. Industry experts echo this, pointing to economic challenges and consumer preference for cost-effective 4G plans as key barriers to 5G adoption.

Data usage reflects Nigeria’s digital appetite, with 1,002,132.73 terabytes consumed in August, a 1.01% increase from July’s 992,149.04 terabytes. This surge underscores the need for robust networks, where 4G excels. However, 5G’s potential to transform industries like healthcare and education remains a focal point for stakeholders.

As Nigeria’s telecom sector evolves, 4G’s dominance highlights its reliability, while 5G’s slow adoption signals a need for strategic investments. With MTN and Airtel pushing 5G infrastructure, the NCC remains optimistic, projecting broader 5G coverage by 2026. For now, 4G’s market lead reflects consumer trust and accessibility, shaping Nigeria’s digital future.
