The death toll from the Palm Sunday night attack in Jos North Local Government Area has risen to 28, up from the 14 initially confirmed by the Nigeria Police Force, as more bodies were recovered from the scene in Angwan Rukuba. The escalating casualty figures have deepened anxiety among residents and heightened pressure on security agencies to restore order in the Plateau State capital.

Police reported receiving a distress call around 2030 hours on 29 March and have since deployed tactical teams to the area. Joint security operations are currently underway to apprehend those responsible for the violence. Authorities confirmed that the initial victims have been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

In response to the unrest, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew across the affected area to contain further violence and allow security operatives to stabilise the situation. Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the scene of the attack, pledging justice for the victims and their families. He also announced state-funded medical care for the injured and committed to providing support packages for families who lost loved ones.

The governor urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and refrain from reprisal attacks that could escalate tensions. The incident underscores persistent security challenges in Plateau State, which has experienced cycles of communal violence over the years, often with significant humanitarian and economic consequences.

From an economic perspective, recurrent violence in parts of North-Central Nigeria disrupts agricultural activity, trade routes, and local commerce, imposing costs on households and businesses. Jos, as a major commercial hub in the region, depends on stability for its markets, transport networks, and food supply chains. The curfew and associated disruptions will likely affect economic activity in the short term, compounding existing pressures from inflation and currency volatility.

The federal government’s broader security reforms, including proposed state police frameworks, face renewed scrutiny in light of such incidents. Lawmakers returning from the Eid break are expected to revisit debates on policing architecture, with advocates arguing that localised security structures could respond more swiftly to emerging threats.

As investigations continue, the Plateau State Government faces the dual challenge of ensuring accountability for the attack while preventing further escalation. The coming days will test the effectiveness of the curfew and the capacity of joint security operations to restore confidence among residents.
