Nigeria has earned approval from the United Nations for the strides it’s made in embracing digital change, marking a significant step in the country’s drive to modernise and streamline how government, business and citizens interact. The thumbs-up acknowledges that Nigeria is no longer simply talking about digitalisation, but is actively embedding it across sectors.

The UN’s endorsement comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to adopt digital tools and platforms, with the aim of improving service delivery, enhancing citizen access, and raising overall productivity. In sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture and governance, digital technologies are being used to improve outreach and reduce bottlenecks. For instance, initiatives to improve connectivity and deepen internet penetration are yielding results, and number of Nigerians online continues to climb.

At the same time, Nigeria is establishing frameworks to ensure this transition is safe and inclusive. The nation is scaling up investments in cybersecurity, data protection and regulation, which will help address risks associated with digital economies, such as fraud, exclusion and infrastructure gaps. The acknowledgment by the UN signals confidence in Nigeria’s willingness to pair technological ambition with regulatory safeguards.

However, the transformation is not just about technology for its own sake. It is anchored in a broader national ambition: to create a more competitive, diversified economy less dependent on traditional sectors. With so many young people, a growing startup ecosystem and rising digital adoption, Nigeria is poised to capture new industrial- and service-based opportunities.

Still, the journey has its challenges. Uneven infrastructure (especially in rural areas), digital literacy shortfalls and regulatory complexity remain hurdles. But Nigeria’s momentum is clear: the country is moving from offline to online, from analogue to digital, and from service-delivery lag to aspiration-driven acceleration.

Nigeria’s digital economy already contributes about 18 % of GDP and is projected to grow to over 20 % by 2030. With e-commerce predicted to exceed US$16 billion by 2030, the tech shift is becoming a major engine for job creation, investment inflows and diversification away from oil-dependence.
