President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made history with a landmark appointment that is being widely celebrated across Nigeria’s legal and academic communities. In a move signaling progress and inclusivity, Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote has been named the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, becoming the first female to ever lead the institution since its founding in 1962.

The decision was officially announced in a statement from the Presidency on January 6, 2026, and the appointment is set to take effect from January 10, 2026. Dr. Odusote will serve in the role for a four-year term, succeeding Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose term concludes on January 9.

Dr. Odusote’s appointment is being hailed as a major milestone in the history of legal education in Nigeria, reflecting both her long service within the Nigerian Law School system and broader efforts to promote gender equity in leadership positions across the country’s public institutions.

At 54 years old, Odusote brings extensive experience to her new role. She has spent the majority of her professional life within the Nigerian Law School, beginning her career there in 2001 as a lecturer. Over more than two decades, she has risen through the ranks, serving in critical roles such as Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of the Lagos Campus before being tapped for the top job.

Her academic background is equally impressive. Dr. Odusote earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She went on to receive a Master of Laws (LL.M) from the same institution, where she specialized in company and commercial law. She later pursued advanced studies abroad, securing a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, with research interests in Public Law and the Administration of Justice.

“She will also serve as the primary liaison between the school, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.” This statement from the presidency highlights the strategic nature of her new position and the critical partnerships she will manage as head of the country’s central legal training institution.

Throughout her career, Odusote has combined academic work with leadership responsibilities. She has published widely in respected law journals both within Nigeria and internationally, and she has presented research papers at various legal education forums. She has also contributed to professional bodies, serving on committees with the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association, further cementing her influence in shaping legal education and practice.

Her brief stint as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the UK gave her additional international perspective and academic exposure, experience that observers say will enrich her leadership and strategic vision at the Nigerian Law School.

As the Director-General, Dr. Odusote will be responsible for providing overall academic leadership, administrative oversight, and strategic direction for the institution’s network of campuses across Nigeria. Faculty, students, and legal professionals are watching closely, as her leadership will influence the quality and scope of professional legal training at a time when the country’s legal sector is becoming increasingly central to economic and institutional development.

Her appointment has sparked wide discussion among legal practitioners and civic leaders, many of whom see it as a signal of renewed commitment to professionalism and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s legal education system. It also sets a precedent that could inspire more equitable representation of women in leadership roles across Nigeria’s education and judicial infrastructures.

This historic appointment marks a new chapter for the Nigerian Law School and reflects broader national conversations about diversity, competence, and leadership in public service.
