The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that it has significantly exceeded its revenue target for 2025, bringing in over ₦1.57 trillion for the Federal Government. The announcement came just days before the end of the year and reflects a strong performance by the command.

At a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, the Customs Area Controller, revealed that the command was originally set a revenue target of ₦1,524,669,999,478.52 for the year. However, the final figures showed that the command had collected N1,576,507,651,601.84, meaning it outperformed its goal by about ₦51.84 billion.

Mr Onyeka said the achievement was the result of discipline, professionalism and dedication by customs officers and staff at the port. He highlighted that deliberate reforms and improvements to operational procedures had played a central role in driving the strong revenue performance.

According to the customs boss, bulk cargo, general merchandise and the importation of used vehicles were among the major contributors to the command’s revenue haul. These categories of imports accounted for a large share of the goods processed at the port, helping to boost collections.

Mr Onyeka explained that the command had focused on eliminating revenue leakages and addressing operational inefficiencies, particularly those caused by unnecessary alerts that in the past slowed cargo clearance. By streamlining these alerts and improving internal coordination, the command was able to improve efficiency without compromising control.

Stakeholder engagement was also an important part of the command’s strategy. Regular meetings and cooperation with importers, licensed customs agents, terminal operators and shipping companies helped to create a more enabling environment for legitimate trade. These partnerships encouraged compliance with customs procedures and supported revenue collection efforts.

Mr Onyeka also stressed that the command remained vigilant in its enforcement role. He said intelligence-driven operations and careful monitoring had led to the seizure of prohibited and improperly declared goods, underscoring that revenue generation did not come at the expense of national security or regulatory compliance.

The Area Controller emphasised that exceeding the annual target would not lead to any relaxation in operational standards. Officers and staff of the command, he said, would remain focused on sustaining revenue performance and strengthening compliance enforcement in the year ahead.

On future prospects, Mr Onyeka expressed optimism that the command would continue to improve its performance in 2026. He also highlighted the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, as a key factor in the command’s success, pointing to his strategic direction and commitment to professionalism, automation and stakeholder engagement.

Mr Onyeka thanked stakeholders for their cooperation and the media for its support, reaffirming the command’s commitment to transparency and to contributing effectively to the government’s fiscal objectives.

The strong revenue outcome at Tin Can Island Port reflects broader efforts by the Nigeria Customs Service to improve collection efficiency and support the country’s economic goals.
