The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has received two new 100MVA power transformers for its ongoing 330/132/33kV transmission substation project in Katsina State. The development is expected to significantly improve electricity transmission in the state and increase the power supply available across the North-West region.
According to TCN, the transformers arrived on Thursday, July 9, 2026, and will soon be installed at the new substation, which is currently under construction. The company described the delivery as an important milestone in its efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity transmission network and improve power distribution to homes, businesses, and industries.
TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the delivery of the transformers is part of the company’s ongoing grid expansion programme. The initiative is aimed at upgrading the country’s transmission infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for electricity and ensure a more reliable power supply.
Mbah explained that the two transformers are essential components needed to complete the Katsina transmission substation. Once they are installed, tested, and officially commissioned, the new equipment will increase the region’s transmission capacity by about 160 megawatts (MW).
She noted that the additional capacity will make it easier for TCN to transmit larger amounts of electricity to Distribution Companies (DisCos), which are responsible for supplying power to customers across Katsina State and nearby communities. This is expected to improve electricity availability and reduce challenges linked to limited transmission capacity.
The company also stated that the completion of the new substation will improve the reliability, flexibility, and efficiency of the transmission network. A stronger transmission system will help reduce power interruptions, improve grid stability, and support better electricity delivery across the region.
TCN believes the project will play a key role in supporting economic activities by providing a more dependable power supply to businesses, public institutions, and residential areas. Improved electricity infrastructure is also expected to encourage investment and promote industrial growth in Katsina State and other parts of the North-West.
The Katsina transmission substation is one of several major electricity projects currently being carried out by TCN across Nigeria. These projects are focused on expanding the national grid, modernising ageing infrastructure, and reinforcing the transmission system to handle the country’s growing electricity needs.
As electricity demand continues to rise due to population growth and increased economic activities, TCN says it remains committed to improving the country’s power transmission network through strategic investments in modern equipment and infrastructure.
The company added that projects like the Katsina substation are designed to ensure that electricity generated across the country can be transmitted more efficiently to Distribution Companies without overloading the national grid. This will help improve power delivery and support the government’s efforts to provide more stable electricity to Nigerians.
With the arrival of the new transformers, work on the Katsina substation is expected to move into its next phase. Once the facility becomes operational, it is expected to strengthen bulk electricity supply, improve service reliability, and enhance the overall performance of the power transmission network in Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
