Sahara Group Foundation has officially opened its 16th Sahara Go-Recycling Hub in Lekki, Lagos, and it’s not just any recycling centre. This new hub is the first in their network to feature a solar-powered Reverse Vending Machine (RVM), blending green energy with waste recovery.

Strategically placed in one of Lagos’s fastest-growing districts, the facility strengthens the Foundation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and local community support. The hub builds on the success of its 15 other locations across Lagos, reinforcing an expanding recycling footprint.

“Sustainable change happens when communities, technology, and purpose come together,” said Moroti Adedoyin-Adeyinka, Executive Director of Sahara Group. Director Chidilim Menakaya added: “By integrating clean energy solutions like the solar-powered Reverse Vending Machine, we are demonstrating how innovation can strengthen environmental responsibility while improving quality of life … This hub is a testament to what is possible when we combine commitment with action.”

In practical terms, the Go-Recycling initiative encourages residents to deposit sorted waste like plastics, aluminium cans, and paper, in exchange for cash or rewards. This model supports a circular economy, transforming discarded materials into value while cutting pollution.

Since its inception, the programme has collected over 650 tonnes of recyclables and disbursed more than ₦55 million in payouts to local participants. More than 1,200 households have benefited, gaining alternative income opportunities and contributing to community resilience.

Representatives of the 2025 Sahara Group Graduate Management Trainees spoke of the project’s deep meaning:

“As Graduate Management Trainees, being part of the Lekki Go-Recycling Hub project … has been a meaningful way to live out Sahara’s sustainability values. … seeing the hub’s impact … reinforces how small actions can drive real change. We’re proud to be part of this initiative.”

EcoBarter CEO Rita Idehai praised the collaboration, calling it evidence that responsible disposal and local livelihoods can go hand in hand:

“Together, we are creating a system that rewards responsible disposal, supports local livelihoods, and brings technology-driven recycling closer to the community.”

The solar-powered Lekki hub not only cuts environmental costs but injects value into the local economy: residents earn real income from recyclable waste. By facilitating payouts (over ₦55 million so far), Sahara Foundation empowers households, stimulates grassroots entrepreneurship, and strengthens Nigeria’s emerging circular-economy market.
