A Qatar Airways flight carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members was forced to make an emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Friday night after experiencing a technical fault while flying over Nigerian airspace. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the problem occurred mid-air and triggered a distress signal, prompting a swift response by emergency teams at the airport.
According to a statement released by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the aircraft sent a distress alert that activated the state’s emergency response plan, including fire and rescue services standing by on the runway. The pilot was guided by air traffic control and successfully brought the plane down safely on the runway, avoiding what could have been a serious aviation disaster.
Eyewitnesses at the airport described tense moments as the aircraft descended toward the runway with emergency responders and fire crews ready to act. Many passengers onboard later spoke of fear and relief as the plane touched down without any injuries or casualties reported.
Once on the ground, all passengers and crew were evacuated safely and there were no reports of injuries. LASEMA said a thorough inspection was carried out before the aircraft was moved to the apron for detailed technical checks and necessary repairs.
LASEMA emphasised that the coordinated response by its own team and other emergency responders helped avert further danger, noting that the aircraft did not sustain significant damage despite the in-flight issue. The agency confirmed that recovery operations have been completed and the plane remains secure on the airport apron.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also confirmed the emergency landing and said it is monitoring reports with more information to be released as investigations continue. The airline had not issued an official public statement at the time of early reporting, but regulatory authorities on the ground reiterated that passenger safety was maintained throughout the incident.
This incident adds to a series of flights in recent times where unexpected technical faults have led to emergency procedures, although safety protocols are designed to handle such events to prevent loss of life. Aviation experts say that pilots and crew are trained for these situations, and the success of the landing in Lagos reflects adherence to international safety standards.
