Open Grazing Not Banned Minister Confirms

The Federal Government (FG) has unequivocally debunked reports circulating in some media outlets claiming a nationwide ban on open grazing. The clarification was made by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, during the inauguration of an ultramodern Veterinary Hospital in Yola.

The Minister confirmed that no such policy announcing an outright ban has been issued. Instead, the government is implementing a “gradual, well-structured transition” from the traditional method of open grazing to modern ranching systems.

Maiha detailed that Nigeria currently possesses 273 gazetted grazing reserves, which cover over 4.5 million hectares. The Federal Government is committed to working closely with state governments to revitalise, equip, and make these reserves conducive for pastoralists and other livestock operators.

The Minister explained that the transition plan is designed not to abolish open grazing instantly, but rather to introduce viable alternatives that will boost productivity, significantly reduce conflicts between herders and farmers, and foster a sustainable livestock ecosystem.

He emphasised that pastoralists, like all other economic groups, require a structured business environment. According to Maiha, the grazing reserves provided by law are intended to “serve as business premises for all livestock activities.” He stated that the government’s core responsibility is to upgrade these reserves and facilitate their proper utilisation.

Maiha urged the public to disregard misleading media reports and stressed the importance of relying solely on official government communication channels for accurate information concerning livestock development policies.
