Nigeria’s digital growth is impressive yet falls short of expectations. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reports that with 140 million Internet subscribers as of August 2025, nationwide broadband penetration now sits at 48.8 percent—still well under the 70 percent target set for later in the year.
Most users access the web via mobile networks: out of the total, 139 million are mobile internet subscribers. In contrast, wired or wireless ISP users amount to just 289,369, while VoIP users total 220,054, and fixed wired connections are largely negligible, with only 29,490 subscribers.
Historical trends underscore the slow climb. In July 2025, internet subscriptions topped 138 million, with broadband penetration at 48 percent. Through April to May, the penetration rate dipped, hovered near 48.8 percent in June, then slipped again before rebounding to 48.81 percent in August.
Though Nigeria remains off track, analysts remain hopeful. Based on current momentum and increasing subscription numbers, they believe the 70 percent target might still be within reach by December.
