Nigeria’s economy saw significant growth in the second quarter of 2025, with its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increasing by 4.23% the fastest pace in four years.

This surge is attributed to a substantial rise in crude oil production, which grew by 20.46% year-on-year, driven by increased oil output and anti-vandalism efforts.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the average daily oil production hit 1.68 million barrels per day, enabling Nigeria to meet its Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota for the quarter. This growth marks the highest level since 2020.

However, the economic success was not solely dependent on oil. A closer look at the data reveals a broad-based recovery with the non-oil sector also posting a strong growth of 3.64% during the same period.

This diversified growth is a vital sign of the economy’s resilience and its potential to wean itself off a heavy reliance on a single commodity.

The non-oil sector’s performance was led by key industries that are increasingly becoming cornerstones of the Nigerian economy. The agriculture sector, the largest employer in the country, demonstrated solid growth, signifying an improvement in food production and supply chains.

Similarly, the information and communication sector continued its rapid expansion, driven by the ever-growing digital economy and increasing mobile and internet penetration. The real estate industry also contributed positively, reflecting renewed investment confidence and development activities across the country.

The industrial sector as a whole, which encapsulates both oil and gas, saw a robust expansion of 7.45%, ultimately contributing 17.31% to the total GDP.

This powerful combination of a resurgent oil sector and a growing non-oil economy paints a picture of a more stable and diversified economic landscape.

Economic analysts point to the government’s sustained anti-vandalism efforts and reforms that have led to divestments by some oil majors as key factors behind the positive oil sector performance. These measures have created a more secure operating environment, encouraging investment and optimising production.

Looking ahead, there is significant optimism from economic analysts and officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

They are hopeful that daily oil production will continue to rise, with expectations to surpass two million barrels per day this year and potentially reaching an ambitious three million by 2030.

These projections, if realised, would not only further solidify Nigeria’s energy security but also provide a substantial and sustained boost to the national economy. This recent growth serves as a powerful testament to the impact of focused policy interventions and a signal that Nigeria is on a clear path to economic recovery and long-term stability.
