The Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has officially been designated as an international gateway, a move expected to ease travel within West Africa and boost regional economic activities. Governor Umo Eno announced the designation, stating that the airport has been upgraded to handle international flights with new facilities, including a terminal building, enhanced security, and improved immigration services.
The governor noted that the airport is now positioned to serve as a hub for business and leisure travellers from neighbouring countries, including Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. The development is part of the state’s broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment and promote tourism. Regular international flights are expected to commence in the coming weeks, with several airlines already expressing interest in operating from the airport. The governor also revealed plans to establish a cargo terminal to facilitate the export of agricultural produce and other goods.
From an economic development perspective, the upgrade positions Akwa Ibom as a potential aviation hub in the South-South region, which could reduce the need for travellers and businesses to route through Lagos or Abuja for international connections. This can save time and logistics costs, making the state more attractive for investment. The planned cargo terminal is particularly significant for the agricultural sector, as it can provide a direct route for exporting perishable goods, reducing post-harvest losses and improving income for farmers. However, the airport’s success will depend on consistent flight schedules, competitive pricing, and the ability to attract enough passenger and cargo traffic to sustain operations.
