Nigeria’s stock market closed strongly on Friday, December 19, 2025, with the All-Share Index (ASI) recording a notable 1.13% gain, propelled in large part by impressive performance from heavyweight stocks including BUA Foods and BUA Cement.

The NGX All-Share Index, a key benchmark that tracks the performance of listed equities on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), climbed by 1,694.4 points to finish at 152,057.4, reflecting renewed investor buying interest and optimism in market sentiment at the end of the week.

Heavyweights such as consumer staples and building materials stocks were particularly influential in driving the market’s overall upswing. BUA Foods, which has been one of the top performers on NGX this year, saw its share price maintain upward momentum, while BUA Cement also attracted investor attention and contributed strongly to the broad market advance.

“BUA Foods’s share price has recorded significant gains, supported by broad market interest in consumer sector stocks,” analysts noted, reflecting the broader resilience seen in staples and essential goods sectors amid macroeconomic shifts.

“Meanwhile, BUA Cement has also been a major contributor to the market’s strength, with improving financial results and increased trading volumes seen in recent sessions,” market watchers added.

Trading activity on the NGX showed breadth, with a number of stocks across sectors participating in the positive trend. Investor sentiment appeared to shift toward risk appetite by the session’s close, with more buyers than sellers recorded in key large-cap shares.

The consumer goods sector, led by firms such as BUA Foods, has been particularly attractive to investors during 2025, outperforming many parts of the equities market and driving returns higher. According to market data, BUA Foods’s stock has surged significantly year-to-date, outperforming several traditional blue-chip stocks and reflecting strong demand from both local and foreign investors.

BUA Cement’s strong performance is also underpinned by improving production and profitability metrics. In H1 2025, the company reported robust growth in revenue and profit, supported by higher sales volumes and operational efficiencies. These stronger fundamentals have helped BUA Cement maintain investor confidence even amid broader economic uncertainties.

“Market behaviour in recent months has shown increased confidence among investors as corporate earnings and sector performance improve,” said a senior market analyst, adding that “value rotation into consumer and industrial stocks has lifted the overall mood on the NGX.”

Overall, the stronger finish for the Nigerian equities market reflects a broader shift toward optimism that has taken hold throughout 2025. After periods of volatility earlier in the year, confidence has gradually returned as economic reforms, policy clarity, and corporate earnings have helped shore up investor expectations.

Investors have also been encouraged by broader gains across the market this year. Broader NGX indices and market capitalisation have shown growth, supported by improved earnings results from major listed companies across sectors including financial services, consumer goods, and industrials.

However, market watchers caution that risks remain, particularly related to currency fluctuations, inflationary pressures, and global economic headwinds that could temper future gains. While the equities market has rallied, periodic profit-taking and selective trading patterns have been noticed in recent sessions, pointing to cautious optimism among traders.

The NGX’s rally mirrors a cautious recovery in Nigeria’s broader economy, where easing inflation and stabilising interest rates have supported business performance and investor confidence. Consumer demand growth and infrastructure spending are expected to underpin corporate earnings into 2026, potentially bolstering capital market inflows and economic growth.
