Nigeria’s Data Boom Accelerates, Testing Telecoms Infrastructure and Digital Economy Ambitions

Nigeria’s internet data consumption climbed to an estimated 13.2 million terabytes (TB) in 2025, representing a 35% year-on-year increase, as demand across mobile and broadband networks continued to surge, according to figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The sharp rise underscores how data has become central to daily life and economic activity in Africa’s largest economy, even as it places mounting strain on telecoms infrastructure.

NCC data show a clear upward trajectory in usage over the past three years. Total consumption rose from 7.27 million TB in 2023 to 9.76 million TB in 2024, before accelerating further in 2025. Between January and November 2025 alone, Nigerians consumed 11.86 million TB, nearly 35% higher than the same period a year earlier. This equates to average daily usage of more than 41,000 TB, highlighting the scale at which digital activity is expanding.

The growth has been broad-based, cutting across major operators including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and T2, and reflecting increased smartphone penetration, wider use of social media, video streaming, fintech platforms and remote work tools. Seasonal patterns remain pronounced, with December consistently recording the highest traffic, driven by holiday travel, entertainment streaming, online shopping and heightened social media engagement.

From an economic perspective, rising data consumption is both a signal and an enabler of structural change. A more connected population supports productivity gains in sectors such as finance, trade, education and services, while also underpinning Nigeria’s growing digital economy. For telecom operators, the surge presents revenue opportunities through higher data usage and new digital services, reinforcing the shift away from traditional voice revenues.

However, the pace of growth also exposes critical vulnerabilities. Broadband penetration crossed 50% in November 2025, a notable milestone, but it remains short of the 70% target set under Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan. The NCC has warned that existing infrastructure is under increasing pressure, with risks to service quality if investment does not keep pace with demand.

Challenges such as fibre cuts, power supply instability and rising operating costs continue to constrain network resilience. Without sustained capital expenditure in spectrum, fibre backhaul and energy solutions, operators risk facing congestion, slower speeds and customer dissatisfaction. As Nigeria’s appetite for data deepens, the ability of the telecoms sector to scale infrastructure efficiently will be critical to ensuring that digital growth translates into broader economic gains rather than systemic strain.
