MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, the country’s largest mobile network operator, has delivered a spectacular nine-month financial performance, signalling a major reversal in its fortunes. The company reported a pre-tax profit of an astonishing N1.12 trillion for the period ending September 30, 2025. This historic achievement is not just a success story for the company but a critical barometer for the health of the broader Nigerian economy. Furthermore, the telecom giant has delighted shareholders by declaring an interim dividend for the first time in two years, a clear indication that the business has moved beyond its recent financial challenges and is now generating significant cash.
This monumental result marks a staggering recovery from the massive loss recorded during the same period last year. The shift from a heavy loss to a multi-trillion naira profit was not accidental; it was the result of strong business execution combined with a more stable national economic environment.
The core engine of this growth was the company’s ability to sell more services. Total revenue surged substantially, driven by a relentless focus on digital connectivity. Data services emerged as the company’s dominant revenue stream, accounting for well over half of the total income. This reflects a fundamental shift in how Nigerians are using their mobile phones, moving beyond traditional voice calls to embrace streaming, social media, and e-commerce. Revenue from voice calls also saw healthy growth, supported by an expanding customer base, while its mobile money and other digital services business lines saw impressive increases, solidifying the company’s position as a digital services leader.
The most crucial factor in this financial rebound lies in the nation’s macroeconomic landscape. A period of relative stability in the Nigerian currency, the Naira, combined with a noticeable cooling of inflation, proved to be the ultimate catalyst. In the previous year, the company’s earnings were severely eroded by massive losses related to foreign exchange. This year, however, the stronger Naira helped mitigate dollar-linked expenses and resulted in a net foreign exchange gain, completely reversing the previous crippling financial losses. This macro-economic relief allowed the underlying strength of the core businessn providing essential connectivity to shine through, effectively restoring the company’s financial balance sheet.
This performance offers a powerful economic angle for Nigeria. The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, to which MTN is a major contributor, is a vital pillar of the nation’s economy, already contributing a substantial percentage to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. A profitable and financially robust operator like MTN means more substantial investment in infrastructure, such as laying fibre optic cables and expanding 4G and 5G networks, which is essential for powering Nigeria’s expanding digital economy and creating jobs. The restoration of dividends and the return to positive shareholder equity also signal to international and local investors that the Nigerian market is stabilising and capable of delivering significant returns, thereby boosting overall market confidence in the country’s economic direction.
By strengthening its financial position, increasing its capital expenditure on infrastructure, and rewarding its investors with a dividend payout, MTN Nigeria is not just recovering; it is reaffirming its role as one of the country’s most financially resilient and strategically important corporate entities.
