Nigeria and Brazil Forge Green Alliance at COP30 to Slash Black Carbon Emissions

At the COP30 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, Nigeria and Brazil have ramped up their green cooperation, centering on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and a joint effort to reduce black carbon emissions. According to Mr. Marcello Brito, Executive Secretary of the Amazon States Consortium, this partnership is being advanced through their Green Imperative Project (GIP), which combines technology exchange, farming innovations, and cross-border climate finance.

“Nigeria and Brazil are collaborating on climate change remedies primarily through the Green Imperative Project … and by working together on renewable energy transition and climate finance mobilisation,” said Mr. Brito. He highlighted that this collaboration is rooted in South–South cooperation, facilitated by the Brazil–Nigeria Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, a platform that enables both countries to align their climate strategies, share best practices, and co-invest in green solutions.

“These efforts are part of a broader strategic partnership aimed at fostering sustainable development and inclusive growth between the two Global South nations,” Brito added.

To institutionalise their collaboration, Nigeria and Brazil will produce a bilateral technical document at COP30. This legacy document will capture policy recommendations and successes from both sides, serving as a blueprint for deeper environmental, scientific, and technological integration. “This will consolidate partnership … around a common agenda of sustainability, innovation, and shared prosperity,” Brito noted.

This engagement comes at a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s climate agenda. The country recently approved its National Carbon Market Framework and operationalised a Climate Change Fund, positioning it to earn between US$2.5–3 billion annually from carbon finance. Nigeria is also targeting a 32% emissions reduction by 2035, driven by its newly established carbon market and clean energy policies.

From Brazil’s side, the partnership complements its ambitious climate finance plans. As COP30 host, Brazil has launched the “Baku to Belem Roadmap”, aimed at scaling global climate funding to US$1.3 trillion per year, reinforcing its role as a finance hub for developing nations.

This cooperation is not just about the climate, Nigeria could unlock US$2.5–3 billion annually via its carbon market, while Brazil’s roadmap aims to channel US$1.3 trillion yearly into global climate finance. The partnership promises a powerful boost for green investment, innovation, and sustainable growth in both economies.
