The Seplat Energy and Nigerian Exploration and Production Limited Joint Venture has strengthened its commitment to education by commissioning additional Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) laboratories in schools across Edo State.
This initiative is part of the partnership’s broader effort to improve learning infrastructure and equip students with practical knowledge that aligns with global standards. The newly unveiled laboratories are described as modern and fully equipped, designed to enhance hands-on learning and deepen students’ understanding of science and technology.
With the latest development, the joint venture has increased the number of STEAM laboratories it has established in Edo State to six. The newly commissioned facilities are located in selected secondary schools, complementing earlier installations in institutions within Benin City.
According to the organisation, the initiative reflects its long-standing investment in education within its host communities. By focusing on STEAM education, the partnership aims to nurture creativity, innovation, and critical thinking among students, preparing them for future careers in science and technology-driven fields.
Speaking during the commissioning, a representative of Seplat highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals in education. The representative stated, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Edo State Ministry of Education to provide quality education in the state.”
The statement underscores the company’s belief that partnerships between the private sector and government can significantly improve educational outcomes. The laboratories are expected to serve as hubs for practical learning, enabling students to experiment, innovate, and develop problem-solving skills.
In addition, the facilities are designed to expose students to real-world applications of classroom concepts. “These STEAM laboratories are designed to foster the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative skills among the students, preparing them for the challenges of the 21st Century,” the organisation noted.
Beyond infrastructure development, the NEPL/Seplat Joint Venture has also invested in teacher training programmes to ensure that educators can effectively utilize these resources. Through initiatives like the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme, hundreds of teachers have been trained to deliver improved STEAM education across Edo and neighbouring states.
The emphasis on sustainability is also central to the project. By integrating modern teaching tools and encouraging innovative thinking, the initiative aims to create a long-term impact on the education system. It aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable development through quality education and skills acquisition.
Education stakeholders in Edo State have commended the initiative, noting that such interventions are crucial for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The government also acknowledged the role of private sector partnerships in enhancing educational infrastructure and supporting youth development.
Overall, the commissioning of additional STEAM laboratories reflects a strategic effort by the NEPL/Seplat Joint Venture to invest in human capital development. By providing students with access to modern learning facilities, the initiative is expected to contribute to building a more skilled and innovative workforce in Nigeria.
