The Lagos State Government is set to begin a six month improvement project at the Turnbull and Parkview intersections along Gerrard Road in Ikoyi from September 14, 2026.
The project is aimed at tackling persistent traffic congestion around the area and improving the movement of vehicles along the busy corridor. The intersections have become major points of traffic buildup, particularly during peak periods, affecting residents, businesses and other road users. The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the planned project during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at Banana Island Estate in Ikoyi.
He appealed to residents, estate associations, businesses and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government to ensure that the project is completed on schedule. Osiyemi explained that the government had considered different approaches to the traffic challenge before settling on the current junction improvement plan. The project is expected to improve traffic flow while reducing the bottlenecks that regularly occur around Turnbull and Parkview.
The government has also promised to limit the effect of the construction on residents and motorists. According to the commissioner, a detailed traffic management plan will be introduced to keep vehicles moving while the work is ongoing. Construction activities will also be adjusted according to traffic patterns. Work will be reduced or paused during busy periods and increased during off peak hours to minimise disruption to road users.
Another major concern is the presence of underground infrastructure around the project area. Osiyemi said the ministry would work with utility providers and residents to ensure that electricity, water, fibre optic cables and other essential services are protected throughout the construction period.
“First, we will engage with residents and also with utility owners to ensure that in trying to solve a problem, we are not creating another problem,” he said. “We have a lot of fibre, we have the Water Corporation, we also have electricity. So it is important to do these things responsibly and professionally so that we don’t interrupt people’s lives.”
The Director of Transport Engineering at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolaji Bada, provided further details about the planned improvements. He said the two intersections currently create traffic problems because several roads connect with the main road at difficult angles. The new design will introduce channelised traffic movements as well as acceleration and deceleration lanes.
At the Turnbull junction, the redesign is expected to create a smoother connection to Alexander Road and reduce the chances of traffic becoming locked up.
“The design concept for the two junctions is simple. The idea is to make sure that you don’t have a lock-down of Alexander Road,” Bada said.
At the Parkview intersection, separate entry and exit movements will be created to reduce interference between vehicles using Alexander and Gerrard roads. The project contractor has also assured stakeholders that steps will be taken to maintain traffic movement during construction. While the government has given the project a six month timeline, the contractor has indicated that the physical work could potentially be completed within three months.
Residents have welcomed the planned intervention, particularly because traffic congestion has remained a recurring problem in the area. However, they have also urged the government to maintain communication with stakeholders throughout the project. The state government said the project is part of its wider efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and make movement around Lagos more efficient.
Once completed, the upgraded intersections are expected to ease congestion, improve traffic flow and provide a better connection between major roads serving the Ikoyi area.
