Nigeria’s national power grid has suffered its second collapse in 2026, leaving the country without electricity.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported that load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) dropped to zero megawatts as of 10:54 am today. Affected DisCos include Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola.
This is not the first time Nigeria’s grid has collapsed this year. The first collapse occurred on January 23, 2026, marking the country’s first nationwide blackout of the year.
Experts attribute grid failures to inadequate generation capacity, transmission constraints, frequency instability, gas supply challenges, and technical faults within the transmission network.
Authorities say restoration efforts are currently ongoing, but no timeline has been given for full recovery.
