The government of Katsina State has placed education at the very top of its spending agenda for 2026, putting forward a proposed budget of N156.3 billion for the sector, the largest allocation of any ministry.
In presenting the numbers, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Malik Anas, revealed that this allocation represents about 17.14% of the total budget size. The full budget estimate put forward by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda for the 2026 fiscal year is N897.8 billion.
Beyond education, the budget shows significant allocations for other sectors:
Works, Housing and Transport: N117.1 billion (≈13.05%)
Agriculture and Livestock Development: N78.6 billion (≈8.76%)
Health: N67.5 billion (≈7.52%)
Water Resources: N62.8 billion (≈7.00%)
Environment: N53.8 billion (≈6.00%)
Together, these six sectors account for more than N536.3 billion, or 59.74% of the total proposed estimate.
An important structural detail of the total budget, 81.23% (N730.1 billion) is earmarked for capital expenditure (investment in infrastructure and development projects), while 18.68% (N167.7 billion) is set aside for recurrent expenditure (salaries, overheads, administration).
Various scholarship and bursary programmes in the state also feature prominently. The state’s scholarship board has approved over N372 million in bursaries for 24,452 students, with the broader disbursement peaking at N744.1 million for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 sessions covering 50,438 students.
Elevating education spending can drive growth by building human capital. Studies show government education expenditure in Nigeria links positively with GDP growth. ([CCSE][2]) By allocating N156.3 billion (≈17% of the state budget), Katsina could boost workforce productivity, enhance future investment appeal and strengthen long-term economic resilience.
