Interswitch, Asaba Airport Launch Smart Parking System Upgrade

Asaba Airport in Delta State has partnered with fintech infrastructure provider Interswitch to deploy a smart parking system aimed at modernising ground operations, reducing congestion, and improving passenger experience. The initiative reflects a broader push toward digital transformation across Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, where efficiency gaps and manual processes have long constrained service delivery.

The new system introduces automated parking management designed to streamline vehicle flow within the airport premises. By leveraging digital payment integration and real-time monitoring, the solution is expected to reduce reliance on cash transactions and manual ticketing two persistent bottlenecks in Nigerian public infrastructure.

Interswitch, one of Africa’s leading digital payment and commerce companies, is providing the underlying technology backbone for the system. The deployment aligns with the firm’s broader strategy of expanding its footprint beyond traditional payments into integrated smart mobility and infrastructure solutions. For the airport, the upgrade is positioned as part of a wider effort to improve operational efficiency and align with global aviation standards.

Industry analysts note that airport parking systems are increasingly becoming a critical component of passenger experience, particularly in mid-sized airports experiencing rising traffic. Efficient parking management not only reduces delays at entry and exit points but also improves revenue transparency for airport authorities.

At Asaba Airport, the system is expected to support smoother traffic coordination during peak travel periods, while also offering data-driven insights into vehicle patterns. Such analytics can help airport operators optimise space utilisation and plan future expansions more effectively.

The deployment also underscores a growing shift toward cashless infrastructure in Nigeria’s aviation and transport sectors. As digital payment adoption accelerates, stakeholders are increasingly prioritising systems that reduce leakages, enhance accountability, and improve user convenience.

While the project is still in its early rollout phase, it signals a broader trend of public-private collaboration in upgrading Nigeria’s critical infrastructure. If successful, the model could be replicated across other regional airports facing similar operational inefficiencies.

For Interswitch, the partnership reinforces its positioning as a key enabler of digital infrastructure beyond financial services, while for Asaba Airport, it represents a step toward smarter, technology-driven airport management in a competitive and rapidly evolving aviation landscape.
