The Federal Government has approved the creation of a new aviation financing platform aimed at improving access to aircraft for Nigerian airlines. The initiative is expected to address long-standing challenges faced by local carriers, particularly in acquiring and maintaining modern fleets.
Announcing the development, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development revealed that the approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council. According to him, “Just yesterday, I secured the approval of the Federal Executive Council, presided over by the President, for the establishment of the Nigeria Aircraft Leasing Company.”
The proposed company will operate as a privately funded entity but with government backing. It is designed as a Special Purpose Vehicle, combining private sector efficiency with public sector support. This structure is expected to make aircraft acquisition easier and more affordable for domestic airlines. Industry experts say access to aircraft has been a major obstacle for Nigerian carriers. Many airlines struggle with high leasing costs, limited financing options, and strict conditions imposed by foreign lessors.
The new leasing company is expected to reduce these barriers by offering more flexible and competitive arrangements. The aviation minister described the initiative as transformative for the sector. He noted that it would provide a centralised platform through which airlines can obtain aircraft without relying heavily on foreign leasing firms. This, in turn, could improve operational efficiency and expand route capacity. He further emphasised the broader impact of the initiative, stating, “This initiative is a game-changer for our aviation industry.”
The move is also expected to position Nigeria as a key player in aviation financing within Africa. With improved access to modern aircraft, local airlines may be able to enhance service delivery, reduce delays, and operate more efficiently. This could lead to better customer experiences and increased competitiveness within the regional aviation market. In addition, the leasing company is projected to support both domestic and regional operations. By making aircraft more accessible, it may encourage the expansion of airline networks and boost connectivity across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
The approval also aligns with the government’s broader efforts to reform the aviation sector. Recent initiatives have focused on infrastructure development, private sector participation, and policy reforms aimed at strengthening the industry.Stakeholders believe that if properly implemented, the leasing company could significantly reduce the financial burden on airlines. It may also attract investment into the aviation sector, creating new opportunities for growth and development.
Ultimately, the establishment of the Nigeria Aircraft Leasing Company represents a strategic step toward modernising the country’s aviation industry. By addressing key financing challenges, the initiative could help unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s airline operators and improve the overall performance of the sector.[
