Dangote Cement Plc has taken a major step in expanding its skilled workforce by inducting almost 200 newly trained engineers and professionals into its operations after they completed an intensive 18-month Graduate Trainee Programme. This move reflects the company’s ongoing dedication to creating jobs, developing local talent, and building technical expertise in Nigeria.
The Graduate Trainee Programme is designed to prepare high-potential graduates for meaningful careers and future leadership roles within the company. Over the course of 18 months, participants are exposed to a combination of structured classroom learning, hands-on experience, and mentorship from seasoned professionals across various business units, including engineering, finance, and information technology. The training is carried out through Dangote Academy, at four plant locations, and at the company’s head office.
At a formal induction ceremony held over the weekend in Lagos, Dangote Cement’s management and graduates came together to celebrate the successful completion of the programme. The event also doubled as an opportunity to recognize long-serving employees and honour outstanding performers with Long Service Awards and Hall of Fame Employee Awards, accompanied by substantial monetary prizes, highlighting the company’s commitment to rewarding dedication and excellence.
“We are honouring some of our staff for their long service to the company, and we are also celebrating our graduate trainees who are officially rounding off their induction programme,” said Dangote Cement’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Arvind Pathak, during the ceremony.
Pathak praised the trainees and existing staff for their resilience, especially in the face of economic challenges over the past year. “Despite the economic turbulence, your resilience and tenacity enabled us to overcome numerous challenges and achieve our objectives. More importantly, I thank you for your commitment and high performance, which have helped us retain our position as the dominant player in the cement sector not only in Nigeria but across Africa,” he added.
He further underscored Dangote Cement’s ambition to grow its production capacity significantly, with a target of reaching 90 million metric tonnes per year across Africa by 2030, which would reinforce Nigeria’s role as a net exporter of cement to neighbouring countries.
The Graduate Trainee Programme is structured to give participants more than just theoretical knowledge. Through hands-on deployment at plants and operational sites, trainees gain valuable real-world experience, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the company’s operations from day one. Many trainees have now been integrated into Dangote Cement’s workforce in Nigeria and other African countries, reflecting the programme’s role in strengthening indigenous competence across the organisation.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Group Human Resources Officer, Ahmed Ladan Gobir, emphasized the importance of investing in youth talent. He described Nigeria’s young population as “the country’s greatest asset,” and highlighted Dangote Cement’s deliberate efforts to equip young engineers with world-class skills, deep industry exposure, and opportunities to build fulfilling careers that contribute to national development.
Four standout trainees who demonstrated exceptional competence were specially recognized for their contributions. Their achievements included improving internal reporting systems, supporting key plant operations such as mill alignments and preheater fan balancing, and aiding in the deployment of optimisation technologies, practical contributions that underscore the programme’s effectiveness in bridging academic knowledge and industrial application.
Dangote Cement’s investment in training and recruitment aligns with its broader mission of supporting local talent development, reducing dependency on imported expertise, and fostering economic growth through industrial capacity building. By prioritizing skills development within the Nigerian workforce, the company reinforces its role as a key driver of industrialisation and employment in the country.
