The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the admission portal for Federal Technical Colleges across the country will open on Monday, January 26, 2026, signalling a major step in widening access to technical and vocational education for young Nigerians. The Ministry of Education, through a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations, said the move follows approval by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and is part of the government’s broader strategy to equip youths with practical, industry-relevant skills and strengthen the nation’s workforce.

Under the timeline laid out, registration for the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) into Federal Technical Colleges will begin on January 26 and run through May 24, 2026. The entrance examination is scheduled to take place nationwide on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Prospective candidates are urged to apply via the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) online portal at [https://student.nabteb.gov.ng](https://student.nabteb.gov.ng).

According to the ministry, candidates must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN) to register successfully. “Possession of a valid National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory for all applicants and remains a prerequisite for successful registration,” the statement emphasised. Eligibility is open to youths aged between 13 and 20 years, and applicants are encouraged to carefully follow all application requirements and guidelines provided by official channels.

The Federal Government also reiterated that technical education in Federal Technical Colleges is fully funded upon admission, highlighting its commitment to human capital development and youth empowerment. By removing tuition barriers, the government aims to make technical education more accessible to a broader segment of the population and to encourage participation in fields that are critical to national development and employability.

This initiative builds on recent efforts by the government to revitalise technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the country. The first standardised National Common Entrance Examination for TVET was introduced in 2025, drawing significant interest from students and signalling a growing recognition of the importance of practical skills. By formally structuring entry into technical colleges, the government hopes to ensure greater transparency, fairness and alignment between Nigerian education and labour market needs.

Education officials have underscored that expanding access to quality technical education is central to efforts to address rising youth unemployment and skills shortages in the Nigerian economy. By enabling more youths to gain hands-on training in trades, technologies, and services, the policy is expected to enhance productivity, encourage entrepreneurship, and prepare students to contribute meaningfully to sectors such as manufacturing, construction, ICT, and other skill-driven industries.

Economists say that by strengthening the pipeline of skilled labour, Nigeria could see increased productivity, reduced unemployment, and stronger private sector growth, which are all vital for broad-based economic development in a country with a large and youthful population. These developments align with national goals to build a more competitive, resilient economy over the long term.

“Prospective candidates are required to complete their applications through the official National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) online portal via the designated website: [https://student.nabteb.gov.ng,”](https://student.nabteb.gov.ng,) the ministry stated, highlighting the central role of the examinations board in administering the process.

With the portal opening next week, parents, guardians and aspiring students are advised to prepare all necessary information and documentation ahead of the January 26 launch to take full advantage of the opportunity to access free, skills-based education that can open pathways to meaningful employment and economic participation.
