In a significant move for the continent’s burgeoning technology landscape, Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, CEO of Flutterwave, has joined a $22 million Series A funding round for Terra, an emerging leader in the African DefenseTech sector. The funding round, which also featured participation from several prominent global venture capital firms, marks a pivotal moment where African “fintech royalty” is diversifying into national security infrastructure. For the Nigerian economy, this investment signals a shift in venture capital focus from consumer apps toward high-stakes, deep-tech solutions aimed at solving the continent’s persistent security challenges.

The economic consequence of this $22 million capital injection is the rapid scaling of Terra’s advanced surveillance and AI-driven defense systems. As Africa continues to grapple with asymmetric security threats from banditry in Nigeria’s Middle Belt to insurgency across the Sahel Terra’s expansion provides a “Made in Africa” alternative to expensive, imported defense hardware. By localizing the production of drone technology and predictive security software, Terra is helping to stem the tide of foreign exchange outflows while creating high-value jobs for Nigerian software engineers and data scientists.

Analytically, Agboola’s participation reflects the growing convergence between financial security and physical security. For a company like Flutterwave, which moves billions of dollars across borders, a stable and secure geopolitical environment is a prerequisite for growth. From a fiscal perspective, the success of Terra’s Series A demonstrates that “DefenseTech” is no longer a niche sector but a viable asset class for African investors. This funding will allow Terra to accelerate its rollout across 12 African countries, providing governments with the tools to secure critical infrastructure including the very fiber-optic lines and satellite hubs currently being deployed for Nigeria’s digital transformation.

The impact on “Regional Security Sovereignty” is a vital dimension of this story. For decades, African nations have relied on Western or Asian defense contractors, often leading to challenges with maintenance, data privacy, and technological “lock-in.” Terra’s expansion offers a sovereign tech stack that can be tailored to the specific terrain and tactical needs of African military and law enforcement agencies. This investment by Agboola and other tech leaders suggests a new era of “Private-Public Partnerships” where the agility of the tech sector is leveraged to modernize the state’s security apparatus.

Furthermore, the $22 million round comes at a time when the Nigerian government is prioritizing the protection of digital assets. With the country moving toward electronic election transmission and expanded broadband, the risk of cyber-physical attacks on infrastructure has increased. Terra’s technology, which integrates AI to predict and prevent breaches, is a critical layer in the nation’s “Digital Defense.” As Agboola joins the board as an observer, his experience in scaling a unicorn will be instrumental in helping Terra navigate the complex regulatory and procurement cycles of African governments.

The long-term economic outlook for Africa’s tech ecosystem is enhanced by this diversification into “hard-tech.” As Terra moves to establish its new regional headquarters and manufacturing plant in Lagos, it sets a precedent for other founders to invest in sectors that protect the “foundational stability” of the continent. By securing the physical and digital borders of African nations, companies like Terra are not just building defense systems; they are building the confidence required for the trillion-dollar African economy of the future to thrive.
