EU Pledges €1 Billion for West African Corridors as Côte d’Ivoire Hosts Investment Forum

Côte d’Ivoire is hosting a major investment push as the European Union convenes the West African Regional Corridors Business Forum in Abidjan, with a €1 billion funding pledge to support infrastructure and economic development across the sub-region. The commitment, announced by EU representative Myriam Ferran, will support Côte d’Ivoire’s 2026–2030 National Development Plan, with a focus on transport corridors and regional value chains.

EU representatives, including Jozef Síkela, stated that the Global Gateway strategy aims to boost local industries and ensure African economies capture more value from their natural resources and geographic position. The initiative prioritises projects that connect production zones to markets, reduce transport costs, and facilitate cross-border trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

Ivorian officials welcomed the initiative, with Souleymane Diarrassouba highlighting its role in strengthening partnerships and regional integration. The forum underscores growing collaboration between Europe and West Africa, with flagship projects such as the Abidjan–Lagos corridor expected to improve trade, connectivity, and living standards across the sub-region. The corridor, when completed, will link major economic hubs in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.

From an investment perspective, the €1 billion pledge signals sustained European interest in West African infrastructure at a time when global competition for influence in Africa is intensifying. The EU’s Global Gateway strategy is positioned as an alternative to other international financing models, emphasising transparency, environmental standards, and local content requirements.

For Nigeria, the development of the Abidjan–Lagos corridor holds particular significance. As the region’s largest economy, Nigeria stands to benefit from improved road infrastructure that reduces transit times and logistics costs for goods moving between Lagos and other West African commercial centres. However, realisation of these benefits depends on coordinated implementation across multiple countries, each with its own regulatory frameworks and infrastructure priorities.

The forum also highlights the role of regional integration as a driver of economic growth. Transport corridors that reduce bottlenecks at borders, streamline customs procedures, and improve road quality can significantly lower the cost of trade, making West African products more competitive in global markets. The EU’s funding commitment provides momentum for these objectives, though sustained political will and technical capacity will determine outcomes.
