Telecom Data Traffic Climbs While Subscriber Expansion Stalls

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector is showing a clear structural shift. Data consumption surged past 13.2 million terabytes in 2025, yet the pace of mobile subscriber gains has slowed materially. This divergence highlights a market moving from rapid subscriber growth toward deeper usage by existing customers.

Total active mobile subscriptions in December 2025 reached 179.64 million, a marginal increase from 177.43 million in November. Teledensity edged up to 82.87 percent, but annual performance remained inconsistent, with market penetration struggling to sustain upward momentum. These figures suggest the industry is close to saturation in terms of unique mobile connections.

By contrast, data usage tells a stronger story. Internet traffic climbed to 1.39 million terabytes in December, up from 1.24 million terabytes the previous month. Over the year, total data consumption exceeded 13.2 million terabytes, driven by demand for streaming, social media, remote work, digital payments, and e-learning services. This trend underscores that existing subscribers are consuming significantly more data than before.

“Data consumption has fundamentally reshaped the revenue mix of operators,” industry analysts note. For many providers, voice and SMS services now play a secondary role to data revenue, as users increasingly rely on high-bandwidth digital services for daily activities.

Broadband adoption continues to expand. Internet subscriptions grew to 112.67 million in December, lifting broadband penetration to nearly 52 percent. This steady climb reflects deeper engagement with internet services and a shift away from traditional voice-only usage.

The telecom market remains highly concentrated. MTN Nigeria held the largest share with about 93 million subscribers, followed by Airtel with roughly 61 million. Globacom controlled around 12 percent of the market, while all other operators accounted for under two percent. Collectively, the top two firms now control nearly 86 percent of mobile connections, positioning them to capture the bulk of data-led growth.

Network usage patterns further reflect the transition. Fourth-generation (4G) services accounted for the majority of connections, while second-generation (2G) still supported a significant share due to device affordability and coverage gaps in less served regions. Third-generation (3G) usage continued to decline, and fifth-generation (5G) adoption, though rising, remained limited.

Regulatory and industry leaders emphasize the need for sustained infrastructure investment. The Nigerian Communications Commission reports that over $1 billion was deployed in 2025 to expand network capacity and coverage. However, quality-of-service challenges persist, particularly around congestion and rural access.

In summary, Nigeria’s telecom landscape is maturing. Mobile subscriber growth plateaus, but data demand deepens significantly. Future sector dynamics will depend on investment in broadband, improved service quality, and closing digital access gaps.
