President Tinubu Approves Forest Security Service to Tackle Rural Insecurity
President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval for the establishment of the Nigeria Forest Security Services has been hailed by federal lawmakers as a crucial intervention that will restore confidence in the agricultural sector and significantly improve food security.
Honourable Olusola Fatoba, a member of the House of Representatives, stated that the new security initiative became essential due to the rampant insecurity in rural and agrarian areas. Criminals have increasingly been using Nigeria’s forests as hideouts to launch attacks on farmers and carry out kidnappings, severely disrupting farming activities across the country.
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, the lawmaker described the President’s move as a “bold and timely initiative” aimed at tackling these pressing challenges.
“At a time when insecurity has deterred many citizens from farming and discouraged foreign investment, this move will not only boost food security but also strengthen our economy through agriculture and non-oil financial inflows,” said Honourable Fatoba.
He added that the establishment of the service sends a clear signal to both citizens and the international community that Nigeria is committed to creating a safe and enabling environment for investment and economic growth.
Call for State Support
Mr Fatoba, who also serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, expressed optimism that the new security unit would effectively address the persistent security challenges emanating from forests nationwide.
However, he appealed directly to all 36 state governors to actively support the federal government’s project for prompt and effective implementation.
The lawmaker advised state governments to complement the federal effort by providing all necessary support to stamp out the illegal occupation of forests and farming areas. He also encouraged local people to embrace and participate in the proposed exercise, stressing that community involvement is key to the initiative’s success.
By securing these crucial areas, the government aims to empower farmers, enabling them to return to their lands without fear and subsequently ensure a stable supply of food across the nation. Sources
