The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a bold step to modernize weather forecasting by inaugurating a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Integration Team in Abuja. This new team reflects NiMet’s determination to embrace cutting-edge technology to improve meteorological and climate services nationwide.
At a ceremony in the capital, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, unveiled the team as part of the agency’s strategy to boost innovation, strengthen digital transformation, and enhance service delivery. The move signals a shift towards more advanced, data-driven forecasting methods that complement traditional physics-based models. This initiative aligns with the Nigerian government’s broader digital transformation agenda and efforts to modernize public sector institutions.
According to Prof. Anosike, the newly formed technical team will identify opportunities and best practices for applying artificial intelligence within meteorology. The group’s core responsibilities include integrating AI-based tools into NiMet’s operational systems and developing standards that ensure consistent and effective use of these technologies.
The Director General highlighted the expected outcomes of this approach, stating, “The initiative is expected to enhance the speed, accuracy and accessibility of weather predictions through hybrid AI–traditional forecasting models.” This means that while the agency will continue to use well-established forecasting physics, it will also adopt advanced AI techniques to boost performance, making weather information faster, more precise, and easier to share.
Prof. Anosike also made clear that developing internal AI expertise is essential for NiMet to sustain its role as a leader in technological innovation among government agencies. He stressed that the responsible deployment of emerging technologies will support several sectors that depend on timely weather data, including aviation safety, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and broader national development objectives.
The AI Research and Integration Team brings together specialists from across NiMet’s departments, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to innovation. This collaborative structure aims to tap into diverse skills and insights, driving effective integration of AI within the agency’s core functions.
Improving forecasts through AI is expected to benefit Nigeria in multiple ways.
