The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) have held talks in Abuja aimed at strengthening energy security and bolstering economic growth. The meeting brought together senior officials from both agencies to discuss ways to improve cooperation between the power and gas sectors, which are vital to the country’s energy landscape.
The NMDPRA’s Chief Executive, Saidu Aliyu Mohammed, led his management team on a courtesy visit to NERC’s headquarters. The purpose of the visit was to establish closer institutional ties and to recognise the strategic importance of both regulators in ensuring a reliable and stable energy supply for Nigeria’s industries and households.
During discussions, leaders from each organisation stressed the need for continuous engagement and coordinated strategies that would benefit their respective sectors. They acknowledged that better synergy between electricity and gas regulation could help address ongoing challenges in the energy market and support national development goals.
Dr Musiliu Oseni, Chairman of NERC, welcomed the NMDPRA delegation and highlighted how joint efforts could promote policy coherence and operational efficiency across the energy value chain. He noted that when regulatory bodies work together, it can lead to more sustainable development and more effective responses to the country’s energy needs.
Both regulators agreed that enhancing collaboration was crucial for long-term stability in the power sector. They expressed a shared commitment to explore joint initiatives that would drive improvements in service delivery and contribute to energy security nationwide.
The meeting underscores growing recognition among Nigeria’s energy authorities that integrated planning and cooperation are essential for tackling the complex challenges of supply reliability, infrastructure development and economic resilience. Strengthened partnership between NERC and NMDPRA could lead to practical solutions that improve energy access and reliability, which are key to supporting economic growth and public confidence in the sector.
