British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic car accident on Monday morning in his ancestral home state of Ogun, Nigeria, which resulted in two fatalities.
The 36-year-old champion sustained only minor injuries and is reportedly “fine,” according to local authorities.
The crash occurred just ten days after his celebrated knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.
Joshua was traveling in a two-vehicle convoy along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway when the Lexus SUV he was in collided with a stationary truck near the Sagamu Interchange.
Eyewitnesses and photos from the scene show the vehicle sustained heavy damage.
Joshua, who was a passenger, was seen looking dazed as he was helped from the wreckage.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) later attributed the cause of the crash to overspeeding and an improper overtake by the driver of the SUV.
Two other occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while Joshua and other injured parties were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
The boxer was reportedly in Nigeria, where he has family roots, on a holiday visit. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed he was aware of the incident and was awaiting more details, adding, “thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images”.
