The Lagos State Government has announced a strategic traffic diversion plan to facilitate emergency repair work on the damaged pedestrian bridge located at Tincan First Gate, Apapa, specifically along the corridor inward Mile 2.
The repair exercise, being managed by the Federal Ministry of Works through its Lagos office, is scheduled for a specific window this Saturday, December 20, 2025, running from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, released a statement detailing the two phases of the operation and the corresponding traffic management strategies to mitigate disruption.
Two-Phase Diversion Plan
Phase One: Lifting and Placing Bridge Beams The initial, most critical stage involves the heavy lifting and placement of the new bridge beams. Due to the nature of the machinery involved, this phase requires a complete, albeit temporary, closure of the road.
Closure: The road stretch leading from Tincan/Apapa towards Mile 2 will be entirely closed to all vehicular traffic for approximately 20 minutes.
Resumption: Traffic flow is mandated to resume immediately once the 20-minute beam-lifting operation is successfully completed.
Phase Two: Installation of Bridge Slabs The second phase focuses on the lifting and installation of the new bridge slabs. This operation necessitates only a partial closure of the carriageway.
Tincan/Apapa to Mile 2: Traffic moving in this direction will remain active but will be diverted to a single lane starting about 50 metres before the construction zone. Full, restored access will be available 50 metres after the work area.
Mile 2 to Tincan/Apapa: Motorists travelling in the opposite direction on the outbound lane will move freely throughout Phase Two without interruption.
Commissioner Osiyemi stressed that these temporary full and partial closures are essential for the safe and successful rehabilitation of the public infrastructure. He advised all motorists to show patience and fully cooperate with the traffic officials deployed to the site during the four-hour operational period on Saturday.
The public has been urged to note the time and day of the diversion and plan their journeys through alternative routes in advance to avoid congestion near the Tincan First Gate area.
