President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the welfare, professionalism and operational readiness of the Nigerian Army as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference opened in Lagos. The assurance was delivered on his behalf by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the event, underscoring the administration’s continued focus on strengthening the nation’s land forces.

In his address, Mr Tinubu emphasised the importance of a well-equipped and motivated army in tackling the array of security challenges facing Nigeria, from terrorism and insurgency to banditry and other threats to national stability. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by soldiers and highlighted the government’s role in ensuring that they are properly supported both professionally and personally.

The president’s message comes at a critical time for Nigeria, as security concerns continue to dominate public discourse and government policy. By restating support for the army at a high-profile forum, Mr Tinubu sought to reassure both military personnel and the wider public that the armed forces remain central to the country’s security strategy.

Mr Tinubu’s remarks placed particular emphasis on the welfare of soldiers and their families. He said that their well-being, training, equipment and morale are fundamental to the army’s effectiveness. This echoes earlier comments from officials at the Ministry of Defence, who have stressed the need for modernised equipment and enhanced training to confront evolving security threats across the nation.

The president also used the occasion to honour the enduring spirit and sacrifices of Nigerian troops, noting that they have served with distinction in peacekeeping missions across Africa and in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty. He described the army’s role as vital not only to national security but also to the preservation of democratic institutions and the rule of law.

Vice-President Shettima echoed these sentiments at the conference, urging military leaders and personnel to continue their professional development and commitment to service. Delegates discussed ongoing reforms within the army, including efforts to boost operational capacity, improve logistics and strengthen internal procedures that support troop morale and performance.

The COAS Annual Conference brings together senior army officers from across the country to review progress, share insights and set priorities for the year ahead. It provides a platform for dialogue on how to address persistent security threats while enhancing the army’s ability to protect citizens and national interests.

Mr Tinubu’s renewed pledge of support reflects the government’s broader security agenda and signals continued investment in the nation’s armed forces amid complex and evolving challenges.
