The African Union Commission (AUC) has issued a robust statement reaffirming its unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional guarantee of religious freedom, following recent, highly inflammatory comments from the United States. The diplomatic tensions were triggered by allegations from the US government suggesting that the Nigerian government was complicit in targeted attacks against Christians, culminating in warnings of possible US military intervention.
In a strong message released from its headquarters in Addis Ababa, the AUC stressed that Nigeria remains a “valued and longstanding member” of the African Union, playing an essential role in regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and continental peacekeeping operations. The Commission reiterated that it “fully respects Nigeria’s sovereign right to manage its internal affairs,” including security and human rights matters, in strict accordance with the nation’s Constitution and its international obligations.
The Commission was quick to caution external partners, particularly the United States, that any engagement with Nigeria must rigorously uphold the fundamental principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, as enshrined in the AU Constitutive Act. The AUC forcefully rejected attempts to “weaponise religion” or oversimplify Nigeria’s complex security issues, warning that framing violence solely along religious lines risks distorting the reality on the ground and fuelling further community divisions.
“The African Union rejects any narrative that conflates all violence with a single religious-target framework,” the AUC stated in its official communication, adding that such approaches “hinder effective solutions and may destabilise communities.” It highlighted that the country is currently grappling with “complex and multi-layered security challenges” that tragically affect citizens of all faiths across the nation.
This high-level diplomatic dispute carries a serious economic risk for Nigeria, threatening to undermine the nation’s efforts to attract necessary foreign direct investment. The mere threat of US military action or the escalation of internal instability due to geopolitical pressure immediately raises the country’s risk profile in the eyes of international investors and global financial markets.
