The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched V-Pass, a biometric facial recognition platform designed to digitise passenger identity verification, strengthen aviation security, and streamline passenger processing across the country’s domestic airports.
The initiative follows the Federal Government’s approval of a unified biometric identity verification framework for air travellers as part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and align airport operations with international security standards. The project is being implemented under a public-private partnership concession agreement signed on April 9, 2026, between FAAN and VERXID Technologies Limited.
Under the new system, passengers will complete a one-time enrolment process, expected to take about one minute, after which their identities can be verified through facial recognition at designated airport checkpoints. According to FAAN, subsequent identity verification at electronic gates is expected to take less than 30 seconds, reducing reliance on manual document checks and improving passenger flow.
The platform incorporates a two-stage biometric authentication process. Travellers will verify their identities before entering restricted airside areas and again immediately before boarding. FAAN said the additional verification layer is intended to deter identity fraud, prevent unauthorised access to secure areas, and enhance confidence in passenger authentication among security agencies.
Registration requirements differ for Nigerian citizens and foreign nationals.
Nigerian travellers will enrol using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture, while foreign nationals will register using their international passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology combined with biometric verification.
Passengers may complete the enrolment process through self-service kiosks or with assistance from trained FAAN personnel.
In a statement signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority said data privacy was a core component of the platform’s design. FAAN stated that V-Pass complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and that biometric information will not be stored on self-service kiosks or handheld verification devices, reducing the risk of endpoint data breaches.
According to the authority, the platform will also provide airlines with secure, real-time access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics. FAAN said it will use a Central Management System to monitor passenger movement, generate operational analytics and improve terminal efficiency.
The rollout complements the authority’s broader airport modernisation programme, including the deployment of additional electronic gates at selected international airports.
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Agunbiade, described V-Pass as a key component of the authority’s digital transformation strategy, saying the platform is expected to improve passenger experience while strengthening airport security.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has also endorsed the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards modernising Nigeria’s aviation sector. FAAN said the biometric platform will eventually be extended to private aviation operations.
Ahead of nationwide implementation, FAAN and VERXID Technologies will embark on a public awareness campaign across television, radio, social media, airport public address systems and airline communication channels. The programme will include a live proof-of-concept demonstration and technical validation exercises before full operational deployment.
