The Nigerian Navy has handed over 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State for further investigation and necessary action.
The handover took place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the NDLEA Onitsha Unit, following the recovery of the suspected illicit substances during an intelligence-led operation at Atani Abo Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
Commander Kabir Yusuf, Commanding Officer of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, said personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Amiyi, recovered the items during a routine patrol in the area.
According to a handover note obtained by Business Times on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the patrol team sighted a vehicle suspected to be conveying Cannabis Sativa and gave chase.
The suspect allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
A follow-up operation subsequently led security personnel to a warehouse allegedly used by the suspect to store illicit substances. A search of the facility resulted in the recovery of 19 bags containing substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
Commander Yusuf said the operation demonstrated the vigilance, professionalism and operational readiness of naval personnel in tackling the movement of illicit substances and other criminal activities in the area.
The Naval Outpost subsequently handed the recovered substances over to the NDLEA Onitsha Unit for further examination and investigation.
The Navy also requested that the anti-drug agency furnish the base with the outcome of its investigation upon completion.
The NDLEA is expected to analyse the seized substances to establish their exact composition and determine any appropriate legal action.
No arrest was reported in connection with the seizure as of September 2, 2026.
